In this week’s reading Emergence by Steven Johnson the growth of a website called flash dot is described in relation to its creation of a unique system and community. The rules of a ‘commander’ on flash dot are as follows (pg. 154):

  1. Promote quality, discourage crap.
  2. Make Slashdot as readable as possible for as many people as possible
  3. Do not require a huge amount of time from any single moderator.
  4. Do not allow a single moderator “reign of terror”

Rob Maldah created a successful community with this straightforward set of rules. This community was created via the web. Theses clear and fair guidelines brought together a large and diverse group of people spread out over the internet who all shared a similar interest.  He found a way to use the technology of a group to improve itself as a whole. By keeping a democratic system Malda distributed the power and work evenly simultaneously. He found a way to create a more interesting conversation on the web.  It was interesting to learn about a very specific example of a facet of the internet which we all know and use today.
