Fast fashion in recent years has become a staple in the lives of many. Affordable “designer,” and I am using that term very loosely, clothing has become a staple in many peoples wardrobes. With rising costs in materials and production in a harsh economic climate it seems that fast fashion brands such as H&M are the way to go. When luxury brands collaborate with these fast fashion brands it becomes a major fashion event. Luxury becomes available to the masses, or does it? In H&M’s latest collaboration with Maison Martin Margiela the houses signature conceptual designs are available to the fashionistas of the world without the bottomless wallet to afford the real deal. As in all other forms of design, fashion must transition and morph to meet the needs of people. Balsamo talked about reshaping design and how fast design needs to evolve. The question Margiela raised with this previous collaboration is one of profound importance to all would be future designers. At what time does luxury stop being luxury and start being ordinary. By replacing the usual Margiela quality with cheaper materials, the high-end fashion house is making a statement towards the need for preservation of craft and quaility in fashion.
